Dreamfear is a nightmare in the form of a roguelite and bullet-hell. Solo developer ant_game_projects from Ukraine has released the first demo for Dreamfear. It’s a surreal action roguelite and top-down shooter, with pixel-art visuals, surrealism, and horror all mashed together.
The free Dreamfear demo is available now on Steam. The dev also dropped a new gameplay trailer showing off the combat, bosses, upgrades, and the dreamscape getting progressively more unstable. The game is currently being developed only for PC, with a planned release in early 2027.
Dreamfear takes place inside a corrupted dream. Dreams here exist as a parallel layer of reality outside our universe, basically an alternative existence that follows you around. It’s unstable, it has a weird cycle, and it can glitch. If you realize that you’re asleep, you risk getting trapped there forever.
There is technically a way out, though, because you need to reach the centre of the dream and destroy it from the inside. But there’s a little problem. Dying doesn’t actually get you out. Death in the dream just wakes you back up inside the same dream, so you’re stuck in the closed circle, an eternity with only one possible escape route.
The enemies and locations are inspired by fears and phobias. So, there’s a psychological angle to it all. You fight enemies, grab different weapons, pick evolving upgrades, build your character up during the run, and try to survive as things keep getting nastier.

The Dreamfear demo has two full locations with procedural room generation, two unique playable characters, and two deadly bosses at the end of each level. There are also more than 20 upgrades, with possible synergies involving things like bullet splitting, energy shields, and support entities. There’s basic meta-progression between runs too, so not everything gets wiped away the second you die.
Visually, Dreamfear is going for a lo-fi horror look, combining pixel-art with unsettling rotoscoped cutscenes and horror imagery inspired by distorted dream logic. It’s got an intentionally rough, strange aesthetic. Take a look at it below in the Dreamfear demo trailer.
