The tutorial leads you into the Blacksmith, where you meet Blacksmith Shinozaki and upgrade your Flintlock. However, sharing this workspace is Craftsman Henry, who offers you EXP, Gold, and the Pickaxe Handle recipe in exchange for some materials. Find out how to complete this quest and craft a Pickaxe Handle in Grand Blue right here in my player-made guide.
Let’s get into it.
How To Craft a Pickaxe Handle in Grand Blue
First, head into the Blacksmith and speak to Craftsman Henry to pick up the quest. You can then find details about his request in your Anchor Town chapter’s quest log under Side Quests (Handle Recipe).
To find the 2x Sticks and 1x Cloth, you need to wander around Anchor Town and punch barrels and crates to find the materials. After retrieving them, return them to Craftsman Henry to claim 136 EXP, 300 Gold, and the Pickaxe Handle Recipe.

Note: Both Cloth and Sticks are tradeable if you end up with an overabundance of them.
What Is The Handle Used For?
Using the Crafting Table next to Craftsman Henry, you can create Handles. These are then used for forging new and powerful weapons as you unlock more recipes and materials.
As the game is still Early Access and recent, I haven’t yet discovered these recipes for myself, but I’m working on it! If you’re interested in learning more, I suggest bookmarking this page and checking back.
Tool Upgrades
As you use your weapons, you’ll slowly master them and unlock new skills and upgrades. For skills, you simply need to press “Learn” to unlock them. After this, you can mix and match which skills are in your hotbar depending on which weapons you have equipped.
As for weaponry upgrades, you’ll need to invest some gold and material ore to enhance their overall stats. To do this, head into the mines connected to the blacksmith and chip away at the rock ores. These respawn frequently, so hang around if you clear them out but still require more.
When using your Pickaxe, you’ll also gain skill points to invest in a mining tree to make the process more efficient and smoother.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the handle quest repeatable?
No, you only need to complete it one time. If you want a repeatable quest to earn more EXP and Gold, speak to NPCs that hang around near Marine spawns. I recommend the Maeve NPC questline, as she seemingly always wants to throw teaparties without the intrusion of Corrupt Marines.
What do you need to craft handles?
2x Sticks and 1x Cloth. They’re pretty inexpensive, but useless without a recipe to craft them into. During the early game, you likely won’t find much use for handles until you start unlocking more recipes.
