If you’ve watched Snowpiercer, the 2013 post-apocalyptic movie, then Frostrail might seem similar. Speaking of Frostrail, it’s dropping a demo on Steam soon. In the game, your only chance of surviving a frozen, monster-infested apocalypse is a steam-powered train called the Eden Engine.
And you also need to maintain, upgrade, and keep the train running while everything outside wants to turn you into a snowman. Well, the last part might not be similar to the movie. But there’s a steam-powered locomotive and a brutal, post-apocalyptic nuclear winter where the Earth has become an icy wasteland.
Frostrail is a brutal co-op survival FPS and is getting a public demo during Steam Next Fest, running from October 19th to October 26th. The game is developed by FakeFish, the studio behind Barotrauma, and published by Shiro Unlimited.
The train serves as your mobile fortress, home base, heat source, and ultimate means of survival. The land is barren. An endless cold has swallowed everything. And the ruins are crawling with horrors due to the Emperor’s pact with the Void.
Life is not easy here!
You play as one of a rag-tag crew of pilgrim survivors known as the Penitent Gardeners. You travel aboard the train as they attempt to purge the cursed land, grant mercy to the lost, and strike down the wicked.
You’ll also have to get out there and explore ruined settlements, abandoned mines, forgotten crypts, wreckage buried beneath the frost, derelict bunkers, and ruined strongholds. There, you’ll find the equipment and materials needed to keep your operation going.
And getting back to the train requires you to find your way back to the beckoning yellow cone of the locomotive’s headlight. The frozen tundra is prowled by Lovecraftian creatures called Revenants, and they will attack the moment they stumble upon you.
The Frostrail Steam Next Fest demo gives you a taste of its frozen nightmare before its launch. The game is planned to launch in Steam Early Access for Windows PC and Xbox on PC.
