. Beat, Heart, Beat is out now in Early Access on Steam. When you look at the visuals, you’ll feel like it’s an emo album cover, and it’s a rhythm platformer with a grungy Midwest emo soundtrack. The game is developed and published by indie studio The Wacy.
Beat, Heart, Beat mixes fast-paced combat with rhythm gameplay
It’s all about chasing your missing heart through a bizarre, crumbling world, slashing monsters to the beat of an original Midwest emo and alt-rock soundtrack. You play as Peccori, a little puppet with massive claws.
She has to dash, slash, and chain together combos while travelling through a corrupted realm known as the Psyche. Things start going wrong after the Heart of the world disappears, leaving behind a mess of Amalgamation. It twists the already strange Psyche into something barely recognisable.
Peccori’s job is to track down the missing Heart, fighting through all the nastiness that’s taken over the place. Along the way, you meet wonderfully weird characters, some of whom will help you out during combat and throughout your journey.
The Psyche looks like a giant scrapbook assembled from memories, mixed-media art, 2D animation, 3D graphics, full-motion video, and collage work. It’s like one surreal fever dream. There’s a wonderful scruffy indie-game energy that makes you want to check the game out.
Beat, Heart, Beat has a directional slash system. It lets you aim at enemies and dash through them in the direction you’re facing, with your attacks connected to the music. There are all sorts of enemies to deal with, including Amalgams.
You’ll also encounter pogo notes that let you bounce around the levels. That’s alongside challenges involving brain fog and other bizarre obstacles. There are 15 handcrafted levels, each with Normal and Hard variants. There’s an accessible Story Mode, too, with handcrafted cutscenes and minigames.
