Virtue and a Sledgehammer Is a Violent Catharsis Simulator, Out Now on Steam

Are you someone who likes to take your anger out on things? Well, then, there’s Virtue and a Sledgehammer for you, which you might want to try out. It’s a new narrative exploration game from Deconstructeam, the folks behind The Red Strings Club and Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, and Selkie Harbour, the developer of Many Nights a Whisper.

Published by Devolver Digital, Virtue and a Sledgehammer is out now on Steam for $14.99. You return home and find out that your neighbours have been replaced by metal knock-offs. So, you decide that the entire place needs a demolition.

Actually, there’s something personal underneath all the smashing

You’re returning to the place where you grew up, only to find that the people you once knew have been replaced by digital copies stuffed inside tin cans. These android ghosts of your digitized neighbours might claim they want to live peacefully, but they’re not exactly alive.

And that’s why you wander through the remains of your hometown, swinging a sledgehammer at buildings and mechanical human lookalikes. As you tear apart the remnants of your childhood, you’ll uncover memories that can be warm and comforting one moment, then properly traumatic the next.

In Virtue and a Sledgehammer, you’ll find robots living in the mountains as well. You’ve got the physical pain of fighting your way through hostile machines, the destruction of a place filled with personal history, and the emotional pain of returning to a weird home.

Virtue and a Sledgehammer uses cinematic sequences of interactive fiction to dig into your fears, desires, and the tangled mess of virtues and flaws that make up your family. It’s a game about family, traditions, and being the odd one out in a place that expects you to fit in.
